Private home on Calle 81, Colonia Centro, Mérida

Only two Colonial rooms remained in this historic home; the rest of the building had been destroyed, leaving only an elongated L-shaped lot. Most of the project, then, would entail new construction.

The design program was ambitious: to create a light, airy, open space in what essentially was a tunnel. The solution was to devise an open breezeway that would let in light and air, as well as serve as a long outdoor "hallway" connecting all of the rooms of the house. Iron and glass doors formed a significant portion of the first floor walls, providing access as well as an open feeling. Aesthetically, the clients wanted to refer to Yucatecan themes, but preferred the clean lines and simplicity of more modern structures.
