Private home on Calle 72, Mérida
This little jewel featured four front rooms in the Colonial style, with additions at the rear dating from the 1940s. The home had served at one time as a school, and rear quarters had been converted into boys’ and girls’ bathrooms.
At another stage, owners had added a pool with Miami-style tiles. The design challenges included converting the old bathrooms into a large master bathroom and modern kitchen; unifying the haphazard styles; and creating a comfortable, contemporary home that still bowed to local aesthetics. A polished cement guardapolvo (wainscoting) refers to Yucatecan tradition while being a low-maintenance solution for the on-the-go owners. It was the client’s inspiration to open the rear of the space toward the terrace, creating an indoor/outdoor living room. And further clues to the interior came from the client’s impeccable taste.
