Private house on Calle 53, Colonia Centro, Mérida

This unique project presented special challenges: the owner wanted to dramatically expand the existing space, creating an upstairs Master Suite, two additional bedrooms with full en suite baths, as well as a gallery, a new kitchen, sumptuous pool and outdoor living area – all with the aim of making the property appealing to the city’s many seasonal renters.

And all on a very limited budget.

In an effort to keep her budget under control, the client pitched in and did a lot of her own shopping. Discontinued mosaico tiles were bought for floor "rugs"; glass Venetian tiles were found on sale and used as a backsplash for bathrooms; wooden doors from the house were restored and recycled, while others were bought from junk shops; and inexpensive new Talavera tiles were used on a single large wall of the kitchen for a dramatic effect. Polished cement was the only new surface employed; and old and out-of-date flooring was "spruced up" and made purposeful by wall paint color choices and furnishings.

Perhaps the most unique feature of the house – the pool – was born of yet another challenge. The client is an avid gardener, and wanted to have ample room in which to work with tropical plants. But she still wanted a grand pool to be attractive to potential renters. The solution was a half-moon-shaped pool, which maximized drama while leaving a large garden plot. A rustic stone monolith with bubbling water serves as a visual water feature and adds a tranquil sound to the interior courtyard.
