Building regulations

The ponderous 160-page Reglamento de Construcciones del Municipio de Mérida presents everything the architect, engineer and designer need to know about local construction codes as well as about the permits required for specific projects.

The lion’s share of the document covers new construction and public buildings. We have translated the document into English, and condensed it to include only those codes that are specific to residences – and primarily residences in the Centro Histórico. Salient points include such basics as minimum sizes of passageways and the number of steps required in X-meters of stairway, to more technical specifications such as the distance from neighboring property required for new construction proportional to the height of the new construction, and stress factors for X-volume of cement.

However, perhaps the most important things for the client to know about building regulations have to do with required permits.
